The Queensland smoke alarm law explained
From 1 January 2027, every owner-occupied home in Queensland must have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. Homes that are sold or leased have needed to comply since 2022.
Interconnected means that when one alarm detects smoke, they all sound, giving everyone precious extra time to get out.

Interconnected photoelectric alarms (AS 3786:2014) in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every storey. Ionisation alarms are no longer compliant.
Around $130 to $180 per alarm installed, with most three-bedroom homes costing $450 to $850 (pricing may need adjusting to fully comply.)
You can fit sealed-battery alarms yourself, but 240V hardwired alarms must be installed by a licensed electrician. Professional installation guarantees correct placement, interconnection and a compliance certificate.
